This abundant, renewable resource comes from banana trees, which are widely cultivated in Indonesia. The fibrous bark separates from the trunk as it grows, is then collected and sun-dried for about a week, naturally developing its intense brown color. The individual strips are then rolled into the characteristic strands, approximately 6 mm thick, which are then processed into traditional basketry by our production partners in Java.

Other materials: recycled plastic, nylon thread

➤ Our production partners: selected based on fair trade criteria

This basket is handmade in Java, Indonesia.

When selecting our local production partners, we emphasize fair pay, safe working conditions, and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses with a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are all experienced craftspeople of legal age. Older people, in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in the craft sector, allowing them to use the skills they learned from a young age to earn money and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to create something meaningful and earn a good income through this work. Because all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process produces minimal greenhouse gas emissions. We guarantee this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the businesses.

➤ The production process: from raw material to finished basket

For our baskets, skilled artisans at our production partners in the Indonesian province of Central Java carefully and meticulously weave banana fiber strands into a custom-made metal frame that defines the exact shape and size of the basket. To ensure a stable and durable structure, the banana fiber is secured with transparent nylon threads. Each basket takes approximately two hours to complete on average.
colors: beige, white, black, brown
brand: Soeji
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0800/7984/7749/files/wasmand-met-deksel-boho-wasmand-rond-grote-boho-mand-geweven-mand-met-katoenpatroon-palem-3-maten-o33-43-55cm-soeji-1170432539.jpg?v=1748418369
https://noiihome.com/en/products/wasmand-met-deksel-boho-wasmand-rond-grote-boho-mand-geweven-mand-met-katoenpatroon-palem-3-maten-o33-43-55cm
