Main material: water hyacinth

Our trays are made from plant fibres, so they smell and feel wonderfully like nature.

The water hyacinth is a tropical aquatic plant that grows in rivers and lakes. It actually comes from South America, but was also introduced to Southeast Asia. There it is considered a weed because it multiplies incredibly quickly and can cover entire bodies of water with a carpet of leaves. The resulting lack of light and oxygen causes all life under water to die. Therefore, the plants must be removed regularly. In order to prepare the plants for further processing, the leaves are cut off and the thick stems are dried in the sun for three to seven days. The result is a sustainable raw material that is available in abundance for many wickerworks here at Soeji!

This tray is handmade in Java, Indonesia.
When selecting our local producers, we attach importance to fair wages and good working conditions. In the factories where we buy our goods, we only work with adult and experienced craftsmen. No harmful chemicals are used in the production process. Since all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process generates hardly any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all this through regular on-site visits and permanent personal contact with the companies.
