The compact Sungai bench owes its timeless beauty to its simple design and the use of high-quality natural materials. The seat is woven from robust seagrass that can withstand heavy loads, while the frame is made from leftover branches of the teak tree that would otherwise not be used in furniture production. This creates the charming appearance with the not entirely regular shaped legs and crossbeams, which are a sustainable alternative to other types of wood.

We deliberately chose not to use a lacquer finish to emphasize the natural color of the wood and its small imperfections. The result is a piece of furniture that not only adds natural elegance to your room, but is also practical. Sungai is versatile: place it in front of your bed, in the hallway or wherever you want to sit. It helps you and your family put on shoes, for example, but can also be used as a special console or side table.

What is commonly called 'seagrass' by basket makers is not actually an (under)water plant, but a small, palm-like plant that is widespread on sandy beaches in the tropics of Asia. The leaves of the plants, which are often cultivated by humans, are separated, cut into strips, dried and then processed by hand.

This bench is handmade in Java, Indonesia. When selecting our local producers, we attach importance to fair wages and good working conditions. In the factories where we buy our goods, we only work with mature and experienced craftsmen. No harmful chemicals are used in the production process. Since all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process generates hardly any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all this through regular on-site visits and permanent personal contact with the companies.
