➤ The sustainable main material: banana fibers

Banana fiber is a natural, untreated plant fiber with a wonderfully natural feel. This abundant, renewable resource comes from banana trees, which are widely cultivated in Indonesia. The fibrous bark separates from the trunk as it grows, is then collected and sun-dried for about a week, naturally developing its intense brown color. The individual strips are then rolled into the characteristic strands, approximately 6 mm thick, which are then processed into traditional basketry by our production partners in Java.

This wall decoration is handmade in Java, Indonesia.

When selecting our local production partners, we emphasize fair pay, safe working conditions, and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses with a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are all experienced craftspeople of legal age. Older people, in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in the craft sector, allowing them to use the skills they learned from a young age to earn money and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to create something meaningful and earn a good income through this work. Because all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process produces minimal greenhouse gas emissions. We guarantee this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the businesses.

➤ The production process: from raw material to finished wall decoration

For our wall decorations, the experienced craftspeople at our production partners in the Indonesian province of Central Java patiently and skillfully weave banana fibers into a hand-formed frame of thin iron rods. This ensures they retain their stable, round shape. The delicate star pattern of white cotton is then embroidered with a needle. In total, each wall decoration takes about two hours to make.
