➤ The sustainable main material: rattan

This rapidly renewable resource is extracted from rattan palms, which grow as vines in the tropical forests of Indonesia. Their branches and trunks are harvested by hand without damaging the surrounding trees and then dried. The inner surface of the branches and trunks is used in varying thicknesses for furniture, baskets, or lamps, while the bark is cut into strips and used for delicate wickerwork, such as the famous "Vienna weave." Because rattan palms require an intact ecosystem to thrive, processing rattan encourages local communities to preserve healthy, natural forests.


➤ Our production partners: selected based on fair trade criteria

When selecting our local production partners, we emphasize fair pay, safe working conditions, and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses with a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are all experienced craftspeople of legal age. Older people, in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in the craft sector, allowing them to use the skills they learned from a young age to earn money and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to create something meaningful and earn a good income through this work. Because all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process produces minimal greenhouse gas emissions. We guarantee this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the businesses.

➤ The production process: from raw material to finished factory standard

For our plant stands, the dried rattan fibers are cut to the correct length by skilled craftspeople at our production partners in the Indonesian province of West Java and then heat-bent to the desired shape. Particularly thick rattan fibers form the basic structure of Akara, and the plant stand is then held together with nails and strips of rattan palm bark, which are wrapped around the thicker fibers. In total, it takes just under three hours to raise a plant.
